On Thursday 17th June, volunteers from the local Sikh Community were at St Peters Square in Nottingham City Centre throughout the day giving out free drinks in remembrance of an important day in Sikh History. This giving of free drinks to the public is known as a Schveel.

Sikhs come together at this time to remember Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jees (5th Sikh Gurus) life and ultimate sacrifice. In 1606, they gave their life standing up for freedom of religion, free speech and human rights. They refused to convert to another religion and were subjected to many days of relentless torture and subsequently martyred by the oppressive Mughal rulers. Guru Arjan Dev Jee was made to sit on a blistering hot plate, while scalding hot sand was poured over them, yet they sat through this calmly and continued to recite prayers.

To mark this day, Sikhs worldwide hand out cool drinks in remembrance of how Guru Jee remained cool and strong even in such a situation. The opportunity is also taken to reflect and spread the message given to us by the Gurus of earning an honest living, remembering God and seeing God in all regardless of faith, gender or colour and the concept of selfless service to all humanity.

300 years ago, against all odds, the first Khalsa Raaj was established under the leadership of Baba Banda Singh Bahadhur Ji with the blessing given by Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

Join us in paying respect to the countless Khalsa Warriors and commemorate this occasion with a special programme by the East Midlands Council of Gurdwaras (EMCG) taking place at:

SCYS are holding a short but jam packed, fun filled playscheme and flying sikhs presentation afternoon.

The 3 days will consist of making vaisakhi cards, workshops, sports, treasure hunt and cinema.

Sunday 11th April is open to all ages, children and adults. A minibus will be going to derby quad cinema for a presentation of Flying Sikhs. Tickets are £2.00. Mini bus will be leaving SCYS at 2.30pm

We would like to say thank you to everyone who took part in organising and attended the SCYS ‘Lend a hand’ Haiti appeal in Nottingham on the 13th of March! The day was a real success with near 100 people attending and included many activities such as bouncy castle, face painting, mini Sikh museum exhibition, cake sales, brick a brack sales, a gatka demo and an exclusive showing of Vismaads’ Bhai Tharu Singh movie. With your help we managed to raise a staggering £540 in only 4 hours! This money will go towards the amazing work Khalsa Aid are currently doing in Haiti.

SCYS would like to give a big thank you to the following people; Bhai Amardeep singh and Akhara from Derby, National Sikh heritage centre and holocaust museum Derby, Vismaad productions for allowing the showing of the Bhai Tharu Singh movie, Sukhwinder Kaur (face painting), all the cake bakers, everyone who helped at the event and of course everyone who attended.

We hope to continue to provide you with many other great events and opportunities. Please look out for the gatka classes which will be hopefully starting sometime during this year. Check the website for updates.

As you may be aware, Radford Unity Complex (RUC) is evicting all the community groups located in the complex…. We believe this is unfair justice, as we were not informed during the decision process

Sikh Community and Youth Services (SCYS) is a registered charity established since 1988 in which members of the community identified gaps in service provisions and take up of mainstream services by the Asian/Sikh Community in Nottingham.

SCYS has played a major role in changing many peoples lives and actively participates in campaigning for the rights of sikhs in UK for many years.

The fundamental aim of SCYS is to provide a wide range of high quality services, and encourage equality based on Sikh principles: vand ke shakna (Sharing all we have), kirth kamai (Earning an honest living), naam japna (Meditation) and seva (Serving and helping others).

SCYS and other community groups located at RUC are Rallying on 20th March 10.30am from the Radford Unity complex NG7 3FW to the Market Square, Nottingham.
