Schveel 2014 – the giving out of free drinks

Posted on June 17, 2014

On Saturday 21st June, SCYS and volunteers from the local Sikh Community will be at St Peters Square in Nottingham City Centre from 10am till 4pm throughout the day giving out free drinks in remembrance of an important day in Sikh History. This giving of free drinks to the public is known as a Schveel.

Sikhs come together at this time to remember Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jees (5th Sikh Gurus) life and ultimate sacrifice. In 1606, they gave their life standing up for freedom of religion, free speech and human rights. They refused to convert to another religion and were subjected to many days of relentless torture and subsequently martyred by the oppressive Mughal rulers. Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee was made to sit on a blistering hot plate, while scalding hot sand was poured over them, yet they sat through this calmly and continued to recite prayers.

To mark this day, Sikhs worldwide hand out cool drinks in remembrance of how Guru Jee remained cool and strong even in such a situation. The opportunity is also taken to reflect and spread the message given to us by the Gurus of earning an honest living, remembering God and seeing God in all regardless of faith, gender or colour and the concept of selfless service to all humanity.
